The LinkedIn Algorithm is Rigged—But Not How You Think - Here’s the Proof

Hi there,
I hope your week has been better than mine because, honestly, LinkedIn just handed me a big dose of frustration.
Last week, I talked about ditching traditional marketing tactics and doing things my way—being more direct, challenging the usual advice, and seeing what happens. Well, I did it… and guess what? Absolutely nothing happened.
What Happens When Your Best Content Still Goes Unseen?
I decided to put LinkedIn’s algorithm to the test.
The Experiment: Paying for Engagement
I hired someone to engage with my LinkedIn post—liking, commenting, interacting early—to see if it would trigger the algorithm and push my content to a wider audience.
The result? You guessed it, a bunch of like and thumbs up, but it didn't move the needle.

The post didn’t take off. It didn’t get organic traction. The only engagement it received was from the people who were paid to interact with it. Meanwhile, similar posts—some with far less depth—were exploding in engagement.
So, what’s actually going on? If even forcing engagement doesn’t work, what does?
What This Reveals About LinkedIn’s Algorithm
This test didn’t just confirm my suspicions—it left me with even more questions. Here’s what I suspect:
✅ LinkedIn doesn’t just reward engagement—it prioritizes authentic, organic interactions over anything forced.
✅ The who behind the engagement matters more than the number of likes and comments. A few key comments from the right people carry more weight than a flood of random ones.
✅ Bursts of engagement don’t seem to be enough—it likely takes consistent interaction over time to shift visibility.
✅ The game is more complicated than “just post at the right time” or “get more likes.”
The Reality of LinkedIn’s Engagement Process
This experiment proved one thing: LinkedIn’s algorithm isn’t easily manipulated. It seems to favor:
Accounts that already have strong, established networks. • Content that sparks real discussions, not just surface-level engagement. • Ongoing, long-term activity rather than short bursts of interaction.
So, if paying for engagement doesn’t work, and LinkedIn rewards some people more than others, what’s the real way to gain traction?
How to Get Seen Without Gaming the System
If “hacking” LinkedIn’s engagement isn’t the answer, here’s what I plan to try next:
🔹 Prioritize high-value discussions – Instead of chasing engagement, I’ll focus on starting conversations that actually matter.
🔹 Engage meaningfully first – Being active on key conversations before posting my own content.
🔹 Leverage existing networks – Strengthening genuine relationships instead of hoping the algorithm favors me.
🔹 Long-term consistency over quick fixes – Tracking whether steady, thoughtful posting builds real traction over time.
Final Thought: What’s Really Going On?
This test showed that LinkedIn isn’t just about engagement—it’s about who engages and how they engage. And honestly? I’m still figuring it out.
