The LinkedIn Intervention You’ve Been Waiting For

ree

LinkedIn was supposed to be the professional network. A place where business got done, relationships grew, and the “best” ideas rose to the top.

But what did we get instead?

  • Connection requests that turn into immediate sales pitches.

  • Algorithms that reward noise over value.

  • A whole lot of posting that looks busy but doesn’t land business.

That’s where this month’s Roundtable came in. And Michael J. Kainatsky didn’t hold back.

Why Posting Isn’t Working

Michael’s first grenade: Posting daily does not equal results.

For many of us, it feels productive—hitting publish, watching the views trickle in. But Michael argued that this is exactly why most professionals feel stuck. We confuse activity with progress.

“Your network isn’t worth a thing if you don’t do anything with it,” he said.

The bigger problem? Most of us are talking at LinkedIn instead of talking with people.

The real growth comes from relevance and reciprocity. That means:

  • Commenting where it matters.

  • Showing up in other people’s conversations.

  • Providing real insights on someone else’s post instead of broadcasting your own.

And he didn’t sugarcoat it: If you think your posts aren’t getting traction because of the algorithm, you’re wrong. They’re not working because they’re selfish.

Connections Aren’t Relationships

We also dug into the second big trap: mistaking a connection for a relationship.

LinkedIn makes it easy to rack up numbers. 10,000 connections, 16,000 followers, 2,500 newsletter subscribers—it looks impressive. But how many of those people would actually pick up the phone if you called?

The group agreed: building real business relationships takes patience, consistency, and value long before you ever ask for anything. Michael’s term for the opposite? Pitch-slapping. And it’s the fastest way to turn a new connection into a dead end.

The Automation Debate

Toward the end of the Roundtable, the conversation shifted to tools and automation.

Here the warning was clear: automation can get you results, but it can also get your account banned. Michael compared it to “handing a Ferrari to a 15-year-old”—powerful, but dangerous if you don’t know how to drive it.

LinkedIn pays attention to spikes in activity. If you’ve barely been active and suddenly start blasting out 50 connection requests in a day, the system will notice—and it will penalize you.

The bigger lesson? Tools don’t replace strategy. Without a clear sense of who you’re trying to reach and why, automation just accelerates the wrong activity.

What NOT to Do (and What’s Next)

When we wrapped, there was broad agreement: this Roundtable wasn’t just about strategies to try. It was a masterclass in what not to do.

❌ Don’t chase vanity metrics.

❌ Don’t confuse connections with relationships.

❌ Don’t expect automation to do the work for you.

Instead:

✔ Focus on commenting strategically.

✔ Build genuine relationships over time.

✔ Reverse-engineer LinkedIn to your actual goals.

That’s where we’re taking the next Roundtable. If this one was about stripping away what doesn’t work, the next will be about building back smarter—how to use automation without killing your account.
