Why Your Next Book Might Be Better Without AI

Hey friends,

How was your week? I spent a good part of my time battling with ChatGPT. I learned something: you can’t reason with a machine, which, as usual, got me thinking.

If you know me, you know I’m bullish on AI—and I’m usually the first to show off a new tool or hack that helps writers go further, faster. We've even developed entire systems that turn legacy content into books, courses, and marketing engines. But as someone who’s spent late nights re-reading The Lord of the Rings just for the language, I’m here to say: Sometimes, slow craftsmanship can be the real magic.

But here's something I don't say enough: AI isn't always the answer. And it's not always welcome.

There are authors who feel like it erases the soul of their message. Editors who see it flatten the voice and tone. Marketers know that a smart strategy takes more than what an algorithm can guess.

And they're not wrong.

The Unexpected Side of AI Publishing

Here’s something you might not know: Last month, the UK’s Society of Authors launched a task force specifically to track “AI plagiarism” and protect the voices of real writers. Why? Because some AI-written works were found to unintentionally mimic passages from existing novels

And in a twist worthy of a plotline itself, Amazon now flags “AI-generated” as a disclosure category for self-publishers—a new step to help readers know who’s behind the words.

We’re living in an age where the number of AI-assisted books published on Amazon has doubled every year since 2022. Impressive? Absolutely. But it begs the question: Do we need more books—or do we need better stories?

The Magic and the Craft

I love a good shortcut as much as the next entrepreneur, but if Tolkien had access to ChatGPT, would Middle-earth still feel so real? Would we have the same sense of wonder and amazement at the worlds and civilizations he created, or would something essential be lost?

Sometimes, AI helps us discover new paths; other times, the journey itself shapes the story.

If you’re wondering how to decide, ask yourself:

  • Do you want your writing to feel hand-forged, like an elven sword, or mass-produced, like orc armor?

  • Are you crafting an epic for the ages, or just getting your ideas into the world quickly?

  • Does your story lose magic if it loses your fingerprints?

The Other Side of the AI Conversation

That's why this month, our Marketing Above the Noise roundtable tackles a new question:

What does it look like to publish without AI?

And more importantly, when should you choose not to use it?

Joining me is Beth Kallman Werner, the founder of Author Connections. She's worked in this industry for decades, helping authors write, refine, and release powerful books the old-fashioned way. Beth isn't anti-technology. She's pro-process, pro-intention, pro-human.

Together, we'll explore:

Why This Matters at DCC

We believe publishing should always serve the author's intention, not the tech's capabilities.

That's why we build tools for both sides of the table: for the coach who wants to automate their process and hit the market in 30 days, and for the author who wants to sit with every word and honor the craft.

AI is an accelerant—but it should never erase your fingerprint.

And if your story needs to slow down? We're here for that, too.

The world needs more stories. Keep creating.
